A breaker that trips repeatedly under normal load (not caused by too many devices on the circuit) has typically worn out. Breakers are mechanical devices with a finite lifespan — they can fail in two ways: tripping too easily, or failing to trip at all. The second failure mode is the dangerous one, and it's why Federal Pacific Stab-Lok panels are considered hazardous.
You also need a breaker replaced when upgrading to AFCI or GFCI breaker protection. Current code requires AFCI breakers on bedroom circuits and other living areas in renovated spaces. GFCI breakers protect all outlets on a circuit from a single point at the panel — useful when you can't easily access the outlets to install GFCI devices.
Note: not all breakers are compatible with all panels. We verify compatibility before ordering any parts — this is especially important for older Zinsco, Federal Pacific, and pushmatic panels where compatible breakers are harder to source.
A standard single breaker replacement runs $150–$250. AFCI or GFCI breakers run $175–$275 due to the higher device cost. New circuit additions (panel to outlet or fixture) are priced by the job. We quote flat-rate — no hourly billing.
AFCI (Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter) breakers detect dangerous arcing in wiring — the kind caused by loose connections, damaged insulation, or chafed wire that can start a fire. GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) breakers detect current leaking to ground — the kind that causes electrocution. AFCI is required on bedroom and living area circuits in renovated spaces; GFCI is required near water. Combination AFCI/GFCI breakers provide both protections in one unit.
Sometimes — it depends on whether your panel has open slots and adequate capacity. If your panel is full but still has capacity, a tandem (double-pole in single-pole slot) breaker can add a circuit without replacing the panel. If the panel is at or near its rated capacity, a panel upgrade is the right solution. We assess both and give you the options.
A breaker in the middle (tripped) position that won't reset to ON usually means there's still a fault on the circuit — a short, overload, or ground fault. Try switching it fully to OFF first, then to ON. If it trips immediately, there's still something on the circuit causing it. Unplug all devices and try again. If it still trips with nothing connected, call us — there may be a wiring fault or a failed breaker.
