More Than Just a Swap

Most switch replacements are straightforward — old switch out, new one in, done. But older Baltimore homes sometimes have surprises: improper wiring, missing ground wires, aluminum wiring, or switches crammed into undersized boxes. We work with whatever we find and do it right.

3-way switches — where one light is controlled from two locations, like at the top and bottom of stairs — require proper traveler wire configuration. Wired wrong, one position won't work. We see this frequently in DIY and handyman work. We fix it correctly.

Smart switches require a neutral wire at the switch box. Many older homes don't have one. We'll check your wiring before recommending a smart switch and let you know if a neutral-wire workaround (like a Lutron Caseta with a smart bridge) is the better route for your situation.

Frequently Asked Questions

A standard switch swap runs $100–$150 per switch. 3-way switches are slightly more due to complexity. Smart and dimmer switches are similar — the device cost varies more than the labor. Multi-gang box work (replacing 3–4 switches in one box) is priced better per switch when done together. We quote flat-rate before starting.

No — dimmers require dimmable bulbs. Most modern LED bulbs are dimmable, but not all of them, and not all LEDs work well with every dimmer. If you're seeing flickering or a limited dimming range, the combination of bulb and dimmer may not be compatible. We recommend and install dimmer switches known to work well with LED loads and can advise on bulb compatibility.

Yes — this is almost always a wiring issue, not a bad switch. 3-way switches require specific traveler wire connections, and incorrect wiring is common in older homes and DIY work. We diagnose and rewire it correctly. In most cases it's a quick fix once we identify how it was wired.

Some do, some don't. Lutron Caseta works without a neutral and is one of the most reliable smart switch systems available — it uses a separate wireless bridge instead of pulling a small current through the bulb. Others like Kasa require a neutral. We check your wiring first and recommend the right option for your home.
