Howard County's housing stock breaks into two clear categories. Columbia's planned community — mostly built from the late 1960s through the 1980s — is hitting the 50-year mark on a lot of its original electrical systems. Panels, wiring, and service entrances in the earlier Columbia villages are due for evaluation or replacement. Ellicott City's historic sections run even older, with homes from the 1940s and 1950s where 60-amp or 100-amp service is still common and knob-and-tube remnants aren't unusual.
On the newer side, Clarksville, River Hill, Fulton, and Scaggsville have updated electrical but a different set of requests: EV charger installations are the #1 job we run in Howard County — the county has some of the highest EV adoption rates in Maryland, and Columbia and Ellicott City garages are where we run a lot of 240V Level 2 charging circuits. Smart switches, whole-house surge protection for home offices, and recessed lighting retrofits round out the typical Howard County call list.
